Idamalayar Dam

The Idamalayar Dam is a major hydroelectric project located near Bhoothathankettu in Ernakulam district of Kerala. It is built across the Idamalayar, a tributary of the Periyar. The dam is located about 80 km from Kochi, adjacent to a forest area. The Idamalayar Dam plays a very important role in maintaining the water level of the Periyar even during the hot summer months, and in supplying drinking water to central Kerala and agriculture.

The main objective of this project is hydroelectric generation. Two generators with a capacity of 37.5 MW have been installed in the power house attached to the dam. A total of 75 MW of electricity is generated here. This project contributes a large percentage to the increasing electricity demand of the state. Built on the concrete gravity boom model, this dam has the capacity to store a large amount of water.

Apart from power generation, Idamalayar is also a tourist destination rich in natural beauty. Surrounded by dense forests and wildlife, this area attracts nature lovers and tourists alike. Although the views here, where backwaters and forest ranges meet, are beautiful, since it is a forest area, tourists are allowed to enter here with strict security restrictions. The role of Idamalayar Dam in the development and ecological balance of Central Kerala is very important.
