Kuttambuzha Grama Panchayat – A Historical Overview

In accordance with the provisions of the Kerala Panchayat Act, 1960, and a government notification dated September 20, 1969, official approval was granted for the formation of the Kuttambuzha Grama Panchayat, effective from September 25, 1969. The panchayat was constituted by incorporating specific areas from the Mannamkandam village, which was then part of the Devikulam Taluk.

Areas comprising Wards 1 and 2 of the erstwhile Mannamkandam Panchayat became part of the Kuttambuzha Panchayat. Meanwhile, areas comprising Wards 3 through 6 of the former Mannamkandam Panchayat remained part of the Mannamkandam Panchayat.

An administrative committee was constituted to oversee the administration of the Kuttambuzha Grama Panchayat starting September 25, 1969, with a President and members appointed to the body. Mr. Ouseph (K. E. Joseph) served as the President of this initial administrative committee, while Mr. K. M. Varkey and Smt. Thresyakkutty Joseph were appointed as members. The tenure of this committee was fixed until January 1, 1970.

Today, the Kuttambuzha Grama Panchayat is a region characterized by unique geographical and social features, encompassing forest areas, mountain ranges, and tribal settlements. These historical records related to the formation of the panchayat are important documents for understanding the administrative history of the local self-government institution.
